A hurricane damaging your home is devastating.

You may end up with flood and wind damage that destroys your cherished items or even causes structural damage to your home. This damage is not only heartbreaking but can also be very costly to repair.  There are so many things to consider when it comes to dealing with the aftermath of a hurricane…

In order to get the support you need to rebuild, you’ll need to consider what was damaged, what your insurance covers, and how your insurance company intends to assist you in your time of need.

Below is information about what you should do after a hurricane damages your home to receive the financial support you need and deserve.

Inventory the Damage Caused by the Hurricane

The first thing you’ll want to do after a hurricane is take an inventory of what was damaged. In order to file an insurance claim, you’ll need to provide your insurance company with a list of what was damaged and what financial reimbursement you’ll require for repairs. You should record video and take photos of the damage for further evidence in case a situation comes up that requires you to prove the damage.

The more evidence and details you can provide, the better.

Contact Your Insurance Company

Once you’ve created an inventory and collected evidence, you need to contact your insurance company (or companies) to file a claim (or claims). Keep in mind that flood damage may not be covered by your home insurance in Florida, so you’ll need to file a separate claim with your flood insurance provider.

Your insurance provider should respond within a set amount of time (in Florida, it’s generally 90 days). If it is getting close to 90 days or past this period of time, contact your insurance provider to ensure your claim is being processed.

Expect your insurance company to send a claims adjuster to assess the damage. Having a detailed record of your possessions and information about your home will help the adjuster to determine how much the insurance company will pay.

If everything goes well, your insurance company will get back to you with a fair payout.

Contact Colucci Law Group if Your Insurance Company Doesn’t Want to Pay

While your insurance company may be fair and helpful, they also may not. Some insurance companies will try to reject your insurance claim and refuse to pay you what you are owed. They may claim the damage isn’t covered, the amount that you are owed isn’t accurate, or they may even claim that the hurricane didn’t cause the damage!
